On June 27, 2014, MOSAIC was visited by Hon. Costas Menegakis, Richmond Hill MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Canadian Immigration and Citizenship. Mr Menegakis is also on the Standing Committee on Strengthening the Protection of Women in our Immigration System and invited MOSAIC to present to the Committee in Ottawa this fall, regarding the organization’s Honour Based Violence program findings. Executive Director Eyob Naizghi accepted the invitation and noted that MOSAIC is the only immigrant-serving organization to operate Women Against Violence programs.
The visit to MOSAIC’s Grant Street office was part of Mr. Menegakis’ first official trip to Vancouver. In a meeting with Directors, Managers and Staff the MP said he was “keenly aware of the services which MOSAIC provides and the work is exemplary.” Items discussed during the visit included:
- Syrian Refugees and Canadian Humanitarian Aid efforts
- Bill C-24
- Domestic Violence
- Forced Marriage
- Elder Abuse
