Statement on the situation in Afghanistan

August 25, 2021

This release provides an overview of MOSAIC’s position on the situation in Afghanistan, and actions our organization is taking. As the situation evolves, we will continue to update this page. For more detailed resources and current information, please click here.

MOSAIC is extremely concerned about the deteriorating situation and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. We stand with our colleagues and community members who are impacted during this heartbreaking and uncertain time.

We are encouraged by the federal government’s announcement that Canada will assist 20,000 Afghans in need of lifesaving resettlement, and believe that women and girls must be at the forefront of our resettlement efforts. Once again, it is time for Canadians to step forward and provide meaningful assistance and opportunities for refugees – people who will become our friends, neighbours and contributing members of Canadian society.

As one of the largest settlement organizations in Canada and a community leader with 45 years of experience in refugee resettlement and integration, we are ready to do all we can to work alongside the Afghan and wider Canadian community to provide essential resettlement support services, up to date information, and mental wellbeing services in the Metro Vancouver area and across the Fraser Valley.

We are currently providing essential support for Afghan refugees in the Metro Vancouver area as well as preparing for upcoming resettlement efforts. To support these efforts, you can contribute to MOSAIC’s Afghan Response Fund.

We are also working hard to ensure that members of the community have clear, up-to-date information. MOSAIC, CCR (Canadian Council for Refugees) and VAST (Vancouver Association for Survivors of Torture) are hosting two virtual information sharing sessions for members of the Afghan community in the Metro Vancouver area:

Tuesday, Aug. 31 from 6-7:30 pm

Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 6-7:30 pm

Registration is required. Please email: SAH@mosaicbc.org by 12 pm on Monday, Aug. 30 and you will be provided with the private Zoom link.
